Don't wait for the idea, just start writing!

"Do not wait for an idea. Start writing something and the ideas will come." Louis L'Amour

No better words were spoken when it comes to being a writer. If you think too much about the story it will never happen.

If you have a good scene in your head then write what your imagination shows you. Don't think too much about the details. You will get frustrated and the idea will die. Don't let your writing die! I have wasted countless hours thinking too much about the small details and lost great ideas.

For example, when I was a kid I started thinking about a story and it never got on paper. I didn't know how to start. I was scared to think no one was going to like it or laugh at me.

The story about a family who bought a new home and found a book left behind by the former owner. The children open the book and get absorbed into the pages of the book. The kids find themselves in a live fantasy.

Sound familiar? Yep, a couple of years later the movie "The Never Ending Story" came out. A kid steals a book from an old man and hides in an attic. The book comes to life and it becomes an instant classic. A decade later "Jumanji" came out. Two kids find a board game in an old house and the game comes to life. Then the final stab was "Zathura" with a space themed board game found in the basement of a house. (Although, "Jumanji" and "Zathura" were both written by Author Chris Van Allsburg.)

Don't let another idea come along and take your story. Just get to writing and don't think about it! The idea, characters, plot, and scenes will come. Don't take my word for it, listen to Mr. L'Amour!
